BackerKit AI Policy
With the prevalence of AI tools, we understand the potential they have to improve workflows and enhance projects. But we also know they raise questions about content ownership, ethical data use, and fair compensation. Our goal is to protect the rights and hard work of creators while maintaining a fair and transparent platform for everyone involved by:
- Promoting fair and ethical sourcing of creative content.
- Helping ensure creators maintain control and ownership of their work.
- Maintaining a platform where creators are fairly compensated for their time, effort, and creativity.
Your crowdfunding project must not contain content or assets solely created using generative AI tools.
All content uploaded as part of the promotion or final product of a BackerKit crowdfunding project must be originally created by a human. Projects must not include content or assets that are solely created using generative AI tools.
AI tools may be used to adjust or refine human-created content, but they must not significantly transform the final product to the point where the original human-created content is no longer distinguishable.
Examples of permissible AI-assisted adjustments includes, but is not limited to:
- Generative content fill or object replacement (e.g., blending or replacing parts of images) using image editing software.
- Basic image adjustments such as changes to saturation, color, or resolution.
- Language or text refinement (e.g., spelling, grammar, and syntax corrections) using AI-assisted language tools.
- Transcription or video tracking software used for accessibility purposes.
AI-generated content that does not meet the minimum requirement for human input will be flagged for review and may result in the project being temporarily or permanently denied. If AI-generated content is found during the pre-launch review, creators will be required to remove or replace the flagged content before the project can launch.
If a violation is identified after the project has launched, our team may take further action, such as content removal from the project page, project suspension until the issue is resolved, or project removal if the violation is unresolved.
Frequently asked questions
What if I’m not sure if my content complies with BackerKit's guidelines?
If you’re unsure, please contact the Trust & Safety team at trustandsafety@backerkit.com or our teams at crowdfunding@backerkit.com. We’re here to provide guidance and support.
What happens if my project is flagged for review?
If your project is flagged for review, our Trust & Safety team will reach out via email. You may be asked to confirm how your content was created or to provide supporting materials (e.g., sketches, mockups, or work-in-progress files) to demonstrate human creation. If content does not meet these guidelines, you will be asked to remove or replace it.
How do these guidelines apply to non-crowdfunding services?
BackerKit’s AI policy is specific to crowdfunding projects hosted on our platform, and aligns with the content policies of platforms whose users utilize other BackerKit services. Our Trust & Safety team reviews content for BackerKit services (Crowdfunding, Pledge Management, Launch) but cannot oversee content for other platforms.
In addition to these guidelines, all content uploaded by creators for their projects will be automatically excluded from AI training datasets. BackerKit will hide creator-uploaded content from compliant AI data scrapers to prevent use of their work for AI training purposes.
BackerKit is also dedicated to helping creators find ethical and human-driven resources for their projects. To support this effort, we have collected a list of recommended directories where creators can find content creators and collaborators, including:
