BackerKit Postage: Syntax Error Troubleshooting

If you're a BackerKit creator and encounter a syntax error while trying to pay for postage, this guide will help you diagnose and resolve the issue. Follow these steps to troubleshoot syntax errors:

International Orders: Please double-check the postage selected. If you have selected First-Class International Mail, you will get an error.

    • USPS only allows documents to be sent as first-class international. Packages that contain items other than documents aren't supported for first-class international mail. Using First Class Package, Priority Mail, or Priority Mail Express should succeed. If you don't want to use any of the other available options, you can also ship these particular orders outside of BackerKit via a different method.

Check the Descriptions and HTS codes on your SKUs.

  • HTS codes should not have dashes and should be at least 6 digits long. If needed, add zeroes to the end of the HTS codes. If the HTS code is too short or has a dash instead of a period, this can cause BackerKit Postage purchases not to go through.
  • HTS codes and descriptions are needed on ALL SKUs, even digital/ non-shippable items, for postage to work correctly.

  • All SKUs need to have a clear and specific Description attached to them on your customs form in order for the customs office to understand the package contents. USPS has become increasingly strict about the level of detail required—broad terms like "book" may no longer be sufficient. Instead, use more descriptive terms like "graphic novel" or "children’s picture book."

  • Please note that BackerKit cannot be held responsible for packages that are returned or held by customs due to vague or insufficient item descriptions, as this is determined by USPS and international customs agencies.

Example:

  • Verify that your phone number on the "Initial Setup" page of BackerKit Postage is formatted correctly.
    • The Post Office is picky about this. Your phone number must use this format: (867) 867-8767

  • Refresh package groups and rates on your Package Groups page.

  • Review the backers' zip code mentioned in the error. You can do this by looking up the Backer ID that's referenced. Confirm they have a valid zip code. If it's from a country that doesn't require zip codes, enter "00000".

  • Confirm that the return address on the "Initial Setup" page of BackerKit Postage is a valid USPS address.

By following these steps, you can troubleshoot and resolve BackerKit Postage syntax errors. If you have additional questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out to BackerKit's Customer Success team by contacting your Customer Success rep or emailing hello@backerkit.com.
