BackerKit Mature Content Policy

BackerKit supports mature content creators. Illustrated comics, art books, photography, erotic fiction, pinup art, and other projects with adult themes are welcome on BackerKit, provided they remain within the guidelines below. All mature content projects are reviewed manually by our Trust & Safety team. We will always work with creators to help their projects succeed within these guidelines.

BackerKit processes payments through Stripe. Some content is prohibited not by BackerKit's editorial standards, but because Stripe's published Prohibited and Restricted Businesses guidelines requires it.

Creators must mark their project as containing mature content before launch. Mature content is shown only to logged-in users who are 18 or older and have chosen to view it. The designation does not affect your ability to raise funds, collect pledges, or fulfill rewards. Projects with unlabeled mature content may be labeled by our team or suspended until the creator updates the setting. Emails sent through BackerKit Launch may not include nudity or sexual content, even when the project itself allows it.

Definitions of mature content

These definitions are intended to clarify BackerKit’s interpretation of different categories of mature content. Some of these definitions may seem obvious, but are intended to ensure a shared expectation of what is considered when reviewing content hosted on BackerKit.

• Nudity: Depictions that show uncovered genitalia, buttocks, or breasts, including nipples and areolas. Depictions where clothing including lingerie, sheer fabric, or form-fitting material leaves these areas visible or discernible are treated the same as direct nudity.
• Sexual language: Written content, dialogue, or descriptive text that is sexual in nature, including explicit descriptions of sexual acts, anatomy in a sexual context, or erotic prose. This includes written fiction, scripts, and narrative text within visual works.
  • Derogatory sexual language: The use of slurs, sexually degrading terms, or exploitative framing.
• Sexual content: Depictions involving sexual situations — including nudity presented in a sexual context — where the work's primary purpose is narrative, artistic, or editorial. (e.g. An erotic comic series, a nude photography book, an illustrated adult fiction anthology, or a graphic novel where sexual content is integral to the story.)
  • Sexual acts: Direct depictions of sexual contact, including intercourse, oral sex, and masturbation, whether photographic or illustrated.
  • Sexual products and services: Products whose primary function is sexual stimulation or pleasure, and services that involve the provision of sexual acts or companionship in a sexual context.
• Extreme violence: Graphic depictions of physical injury, death, torture, mutilation, or bodily destruction that are presented in a way designed to provoke shock or distress.
• Pornographic content: Material that exclusively focuses on explicit sexual content or acts, including explicit images, video, illustration, or written content that emphasizes sexual acts or genitalia.
  • Illegal sexual acts: Depictions or descriptions of sexual conduct that is prohibited under applicable law.
  • Violent sexual content: Depictions that combine sexual content with graphic physical violence, coercion, or non-consensual scenarios.

Mature content not permitted on BackerKit

The following categories are prohibited on BackerKit as a direct requirement of Stripe's published Prohibited and Restricted Businesses guidelines. As a Stripe-connected platform, these restrictions apply to BackerKit and are not within our discretion to waive or make exceptions for:

• Pornographic content
• Sexual products and services
• Illegal products and services

Real people and consent

Sexual or intimate depictions of a real, identifiable person without that person's consent are prohibited, including images created or altered with generative tools. If you are depicted in content of this kind, email trustandsafety@backerkit.com with a link to the content and a statement that it was shared without your consent. We remove valid reported content within 1-2 business days.

Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM)

BackerKit removes CSAM immediately, reports it to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children as required by law, and cooperates with law enforcement. Accounts involved are permanently removed. Report suspected CSAM to trustandsafety@backerkit.com and to https://report.cybertip.org/
