Collecting Taxpayer ID from Backers
BackerKit supports automatic collection of taxpayer identification numbers for backers in specific regions where these details may be required for customs clearance; so they're not held, returned, or rejected during customs processing. These fields appear in the backer’s shipping section of the survey when applicable.
This feature does not need to be enabled. It activates automatically based on the backer’s country.
Why:
Some countries, including Mexico, Brazil, China, South Korea, and Taiwan, require a taxpayer identification number for imported physical goods. If you are shipping rewards to backers in these areas, your fulfillment partner or warehouse may need this information to clear customs and prevent delays or rejections.
Important: Check with your fulfillment partner or warehouse to determine if you need to gather this information.
Where Backers Enter This Information:

What Information Is Collected
BackerKit will show a taxpayer ID field for backers located in the following regions:
- Mexico – RFC Number
- Brazil – CPF or CNPJ Number
- China – Resident ID
- South Korea – PCCC
- Taiwan – NTIN
NOTE: This field is optional. Whether a backer must provide this information depends on each creator’s requirements for customs and shipping.
How It Works
- When a backer fills out their shipping address, BackerKit detects their region and displays the appropriate taxpayer ID field.
- Backers can enter the number if needed for your shipment or local customs rules.
- If the backer is not located in one of the supported regions, the field does not appear.
- The collected data is included on any export that contains shipping address information.
- The column header is titled “Taxpayer ID.”
- If you use BackerKit Postage, this data will be included in the API to help ensure proper customs handling.
Best Practices for Creators
- Include a short FAQ and an informative pledge question in the survey explaining why some backers may see this field.
- If your fulfillment partner requires this information for specific countries, mention it early in your updates to avoid confusion, and also as an FAQ and an informative pledge question.
- Remind backers that the field is optional and only appears for certain regions.
