Currency and Exchange Rates — What to Know Before Pledging and After Charging

If you're wondering what currency a project charges in, or why your final charge was higher than expected, this guide covers both.

NOTE: Any time a "$" currency marker is present, this is a stand in for American dollars. For Canadian or Australian dollars, for example, the qualifier CAD$ or AUS$ will be in front of the dollar symbol to represent the associated currency.

NOTE: Modifying your currency in your 'Settings' only changes the display — this does not change the currency that you are charged in. You will always be charged in the native currency of the Project Team.

Where to find the project's currency:

BackerKit Crowdfunding campaigns:

The currency is displayed next to the project's total funding amount on the main campaign page. Look for the currency symbol qualifier (e.g., £, $ = US dollar, $AUS = Australian Dollars, $C/$CAD = Canadian Dollars) in the funding stats near the top of the page.

Kickstarter campaigns:

The currency is displayed the same way — look for the currency symbol next to the funding total on the main Kickstarter campaign page.

Preorder stores:

Depending on the type of preorder store you’re backing, you can scroll below the project's header image to the banner section which will show the project's total funds raised — the currency symbol next to that amount is what you'll be charged in:

Alternatively, if the preorder you are viewing is showing listed pledge levels, whichever currency marker used in the Pledge Level title is the currency you will be charged in:

How estimated conversions work

Under each pledge level and add-on, BackerKit shows an estimated conversion to your local currency based on current exchange rates. For example, an €8 reward might display as "about $9.39" — this is just an estimate.

Your own currency will show automatically based on your account settings under the "about [x]" amount section. You can update your default display currency anytime in your BackerKit account settings:

Why your final charge may differ

⚠️ The amount on your statement may be higher than the estimate shown. Exchange rates change constantly, and your bank or card provider may apply its own rates or add foreign transaction and/or currency conversion fees on top. BackerKit has no control over these fees.

For the most accurate rate at the time of your charge, we recommend checking directly with your bank or card provider.
