How do I apply incentives offered during my campaign to my backers?

Offering incentives is one of the proven ways to encourage your community to pledge to your campaign. If you have offered incentives during your campaign, they should be added to backers’ carts before the survey is sent out.

If you offered incentives during the campaign, you can now generate segments with qualified backers using the Advanced Segment Actions page.

  1. Create a segment using the Segments —> Advanced Segment Actions page —> click on Generate segments of incentives offered to generate the segment of qualifying backers.

  1. Go back to main page where you will find the segment titled: Early Bird Incentive backers for first 48 hour backers and/or a segment titled: Returning backers for returning backers.
  2. Assign Complimentary Credit (BackerKit Credit $) or Manually Add an Item (free item)

How to find your first ## Hour Backers (for non-BackerKit campaigns)

If you don't already have a list of your first ## hour backers, you can use BackerKit's Segments and Export Reports feature to locate them. 
  1. Create a Segment of all backers by using the filter >> "In these pledge levels" and select all pledge levels. If the free item is physical, we recommend only selecting physical tiers as to not add physical items to Digital Only or No Reward tiers. 
From the Segment >> Click 'Export Reports', download  SKU per Column, which will have a column for Pledged At with timestamp. Copy all email addresses from that first ## hour window:
  1. Go to Segments >> Click Create a New Segment >> Name the segment
  2. Choose Filter, and click 'Backers with emails'
  3. Paste all email addresses from the CSV downloaded from the SKU per Column report
  4. Click Filter Backers 
    1. Apply any other needed filters (such as "pledged more than X" or "in these pledge levels" etc.)
  5. Click Save This Segment and then click on the Segment Actions tab
  6. Assign Complimentary Credit (BackerKit Credit $) or Manually Add an Item (free item)

How do I apply cross-collab incentives (for BackerKit campaigns)?

If you partnered with another creator and offered free incentives to backers of both campaigns, you can apply the cross-collab incentive to eligible backers' carts through Segments.

  1. Create a segment using Segments —> Advanced Segment Actions page —> click on Create Partner Project Segment. Please note, this segment will pull ALL backers in ALL pledge levels.

  1. If you need to create a segment for backers in specific pledge levels:

    Create a New Segment >> Choose the filters:

    Segments >> In any of these Segments selecting the previously created Partner Project Segment

    And Pledge Levels >> In these pledge levels selecting qualifying pledge levels.

  2. Go back to main Segment's page where you will find the segment titled: Cross Collab Backers in physical tiers
  3. Manually Add an Item (free item) or apply Complimentary Credit , whichever is applicable (BackerKit Credit $)

**We recommend waiting 14 days to ensure that all backers including backers failed payment are imported into the Pledge Manager project before generating segments and applying incentives.

How do I apply the incentives offered through BackerKit Launch Emails/Teaser Page

If you offered incentives in your Teaser Page or through an email campaign, you will need to reflect your incentives in your BackerKit project.

First look in the Launch Dashboard:

  1. If you offered an incentive for folks who signed up to your Landing/Teaser page, select "Landing Pages" at the top. 
  2. Click on the number of leads under "Leads Collected" and then click that number again. 
  3. In the top right, you can click "Actions" and select Export list to download the CSV.  OR
  4. If you offered the incentive through an email campaign, go to "Email Campaigns" at the top and click on the title of the email that offered the incentive.
  5. View the results page of the email campaign and click into the total listed under "Clicked"
  6. You will see the committed members, click the Actions drop down and select Export list to download the CSV.

Then in your BackerKit Dashboard:

  1. Go to Segment
  2. Click Create a New Segment
  3. Name the segment
  4. Choose Filter, and click Backer —> with emails
  5. Copy and paste the emails from the CSV downloaded from Launch
  6. Click Filter Backers then apply any other needed filters (such as "pledged more than X" or "in these pledge levels" etc.)
  7. Click Save This Segment and then click on the Segment Actions tab
  8. Assign Complimentary Credit (BackerKit Credit $) or Manually Add an Item (free item)

How to exclude "failed", "digital only" and/or "No Reward" backers

If you need to exclude "failed" backers from any of the above segments, you can exclude them from the segment by first creating a segment of backers with Failed Payment status.


To generate the segment of Failed Backers, click on Create a New Segment use the filter: Backers —> with 'failed' or 'errored campaign pledge status —> add both failed and errored status.

  • Errored status will pull anyone whose payment has failed but is still within the 14-day grace period to fix their payment method.
  • Failed status will pull anyone whose payment failed after the 14-day grade period to fix their payment method & gets successfully charged.

Once the above segment is generated, click to Create a New Segment and use filters: Segments —> In these Segments —> Choose the Returning Backer or Early Bird segment AND Segments —> Not in any of these segments —> Choose the Failed Backers segment.


If you need to exclude "digital only" and/or "No Reward" backers from any of the above segments, you can exclude them from the segment by using two filters when Creating a New Segment. First filter is: Segments —> In these Segments —> Choose the Returning Backer or Early Bird segment AND second filter is: Pledge Levels —> In these Pledge Levels —> Choose the pledge levels that qualify for the incentive.


Then Manually Add an Item (free item) or apply Complimentary Credit , whichever is applicable (BackerKit Credit $).


Note: If you add 'physical' freebie to 'digital or No Reward backers', please keep in mind:

  • Shipping Fees will be applied to digital orders if you are using Whole Order weight based profile and the SKU used for the incentive has a "SKU Weight"
  • Shipping Address is not collected automatically unless "Collect Shipping Address" is enabled for Digital or No Reward Pledge Levels.
