What should I know about importing my project to BackerKit?

Importing your backers from your crowdfunding campaign is the first step in setting up the pledge manager to sell add-on items and ship them to your backers. The platforms we support are BackerKit Crowdfunding, and Kickstarter Campaigns.

Skip to:

Kickstarter

  • Backer information is imported to BackerKit only after your campaign ends, including backers with failed payments. If you import your project while your campaign is live, only your pledge levels are imported.
  • If you set shipping fees for your pledge levels on Kickstarter, those fees are imported to BackerKit

Important: Be sure to double-check that your fees imported correctly. Update the fees if you need to make adjustments. For more information, see Add shipping fees.

Kickstarter Late Pledge

  • After the project ends, new late pledge backers are imported every 3 days.
  • Pledge Levels:
    • Same Pledge Tier - Diff. Price: A new pledge level imports into BackerKit, will be set at the new price and will be set up according to its original pledge.

Same Pledge Tier - Same Price: A new pledge level imports into BackerKit, will be set at the same price as its original pledge, and will be set up according to its original pledge.

Brand New Pledge Tier: A new pledge level imports into BackerKit and surveys are disabled for those tiers. You must set up the pledge tier and enable 'sending surveys' for this tier.

      Kickstarter Add-ons:

When Kickstarter add-ons are sold through the Kickstarter late pledge feature, backers will see their add-ons as placeholder add-ons in the BackerKit survey, enabling them to confirm those add-ons, similar to the process for campaign backers.

      • TLDR: Our platform can manage campaign add-ons for both regular campaign backers and backers using Kickstarter's Late Pledge Feature, even if they are priced differently.

Important: Please set up all pledge levels in BackerKit to prevent survey issues, even if there are no backers in that pledge level.

Kickstarter Pledge Over Time

Pledge Over Time is a flexible payment option that lets backers split their pledge into three equal payments. Surveys cannot be imported until their final payment or decline occurs. Please update backers through campaign updates to inform them they'll receive their survey within 48 hours of their final successful payment or after any failed charge. Refer to this doc for more information. Below is how BackerKit handles Pay Over Time Backers:

  • Backer Status: Backers show as 'pending' on both /c and KS pledges
    • Ex: Pending Status
  • Survey Access: The invite button remains hidden until payment is complete
    • Ex: Hidden Invite
  • Timeline Management: Pay over time backers are excluded from 'send & remind' notifications
  • Status Updates: Upon full payment, backer status changes from "Pending" to temporarily "Errored" before finally updating to "Imported."
    • Status updates occur within 24 hours of successful payment completion
  • Survey Distribution: After Pay Over Time completion, backer status updates to either 'paid' or 'failed'
    • Surveys are automatically sent during the next daily bulk distribution
  • Failed Payment: If a backer's payment fails during the first, second, or third installment on Kickstarter, they will import to your pledge manager within 48 hours. Backers with failed payments who made any successful payments will receive credit based on the amount they successfully paid on Kickstarter. Kickstarter delegates the handling of failed payments to creators.
    • If you receive payment through another method: Update their pledge amount in their BackerKit survey.
    • If you issue a refund: Either cancel their BackerKit survey or keep it active for potential reinstatement.
    • If you maintain the current status: Backers who made successful payments will receive credit for the amount they paid on Kickstarter. They can pay the remaining balance from the original campaign in their BackerKit survey.
      • Update their pledge amount after the backer isn't in the 'pending' status. Updating before will undue the recently added credit.
        • Reminder: Backers status will update from "pending" to "failed" within 24 hours of their failed payment.
  • If a backer’s payment fails during the initial attempt, it will be imported to your pledge manager as a $0 amount. Refer here to see how we handle these backers.

  • How to Locate Pledge Over Time Backers: Using the segment tool, use the “Backers >> with failed, pending, or erorred’ filter” and locate  the ‘pending’ backers.
