How to use BackerKit Incentives

What are the benefits of incentives?

Offering early bird incentives on your crowdfunding campaign can boost your chances of success. They create a sense of urgency, attracting early backers and generating initial momentum. Exclusive rewards for previous backers also can also help build and maintain a loyal supporter base. For more on how BackerKit Crowdfunding creators are using incentives and other engagement tools, check out this help doc.

How to use Incentives

  1. Access Incentives under Page Build on the left admin dashboard.

  1. Create a New Incentive using the button in the upper right corner.

  1. Select the Incentive type (either "Early Bird" or "Returning Backer") and add a description. Example:

Early Bird incentives will be applied during check out to any one who backs in the first 48 hours.

Returning Backer incentives will be applied during check out to anyone that BackerKit recognizes as a previous backer of yours.

What to Offer:

  • Offer a free item. In the tabletop category, the most common items are free minis, promo packs/exclusive cards, art prints, patches, dice or other kinds of accessories. In other categories, we've seen complimentary stickers, keychains, and enamel pins.
  • Offer a free digital content. You can use BackerKit's Digital Download feature after the campaign to distribute a free file or download.
  • A dollar amount of credit to use in the pledge manager after the campaign.

What Not To Offer:

  • Percentage-based discounts. If you want to offer a discounted pledge level, you can set up the pledge level at a discounted price and HIDE that pledge level after the 'early bird' time has elapsed.
  • Free shipping — this is a lot harder to set up than one might think and is not recommended.
  1. Save! Don't forget to save your new incentive. If you have feedback on additional incentive types you'd like to see added in the future, please let us know at crowdfunding@backerkit.com.

Where do backers see incentives?

Project Page: You can call out your incentive by setting up a "Promotional Banner" under the "Basics" section of your sidebar:

Confirmation Page: Backers will see the incentive in the Bonus Reward section of their Pledge Summary as they checkout.

How are incentives tracked and applied?

After the campaign has been funded, 14 days later BackerKit will import the backer data into your Pledge Manager.

If you used a "Previous Backer" incentive, go to "Segments" on the sidebar and use the segment filter "Backers who backed any of these project" and select all previous projects. Add any additional filters (such as "in these pledge levels" if only certain pledge levels qualify). Filter, and save. Then click "Segment Actions" and manually add a free item to the segmented orders.

If you used an "Early Bird" incentive, go to "Exports" on the sidebar and download the "SKU Per Column" export. Sort the CSV by the "Pledged At" column, and highlight the backer emails that fall within the first 48 hours of your project's launch. Copy those emails and navigate to "Segments" on the sidebar. Create a new segment and filter using "Backers with emails." Paste the highlighted emails, add any additional filters, filter, and save. Then use "Segment Actions" to add a free item.
