What is Overtime Mode?
š” Noticed the campaign end date has passed but you haven't been charged? The project is in Overtime Mode, which means the campaign is still running as long as the Backer Train keeps going. Here's how it works.
šš½ What is Overtime Mode?

- Overtime Mode is a BackerKit crowdfunding feature that extends a campaign past its original end time, giving backers a final chance to pledge, add more items, upgrade their pledge level, unlock bonus rewards and keeping the excitement going as long as the community stays engaged. āØ
- When a campaign enters Overtime Mode, it doesn't end at the scheduled time ā instead, it keeps running for as long as new pledges keep coming in.
How does Overtime Mode work?
When Overtime Mode is enabled, each time someone backs the project, the countdown resets to 10 minutes, and the campaign continues for 10 additional minutes after its original end time.
This creates what's called the š Backer Train š ā a chain of back-to-back pledges that keeps the campaign alive. The campaign only ends when 10 minutes pass without any new pledge changes.
š” Adding items to your cart, adjusting your pledge, and new backer pledges count towards keeping the Backer Train going. During this time, you get one final chance to join the campaign, add more rewards, or upgrade your pledge level before surveys are sent!
Who controls when Overtime Mode ends?
No one does. If a creator decides to enable Overtime Mode when setting up their campaign, it runs automatically based on backer activity ā neither BackerKit nor the project creator manually extends or ends it.
Here's how it works:
- The creator chooses whether to enable Overtime Mode as a feature
- Once enabled, the system runs on its own: each new pledge automatically resets the 10-minute countdown
- The campaign ends automatically when 10 minutes pass with no new pledges
- No one at BackerKit or on the project team is manually deciding to keep it going, this is fully backer-contingent
The end time is determined entirely by whether backers continue pledging. The moment the community stops backing, Overtime Mode ends.
š” While creators may encourage backers to keep the Backer Train going (through updates or social media), they cannot manually extend the campaign ā it's entirely driven by actual pledge activity.
š” Why do creators use Overtime Mode?
Creators enable Overtime Mode to:
- Give the community one last chance to join the campaign
- Create excitement and momentum at the end of the campaign
- Allow new backers who discovered the project late to participate
- Potentially break Overtime survival records (some campaigns have extended for days!)

š This is a fun feature for creators and the community. It doesn't delay rewards, and it often unlocks additional stretch goals that benefit all backers.
Many creators frame Overtime Mode as a celebration of community engagement ā the longer the Backer Train runs, the more it shows how passionate backers are about the project.
š How long can Overtime Mode last?
There is no hard cap on how long Overtime Mode can run. The campaign continues as long as new pledges keep coming in within each 10-minute window.
Most campaigns naturally wind down within a few hours. For very large campaigns ā occasionally, a few days+ as momentum slows. The final decision on when the campaign ends is entirely up to the backer community.
Some campaigns have set records:
- 7 days, 22 hours
- 5 days, 18 hours, 40 minutes ā another notable campaign
Frequently Asked Questions:
⤠When will I be charged?
Your payment will not be processed until Overtime Mode ends, usually within 24 hours of the Backer Train ending. For large projects, once ended, charges are usually ran in batches over the next few days.
Here's what that means:
- Even though the original campaign end date has passed, you won't be charged yet
- The campaign is still technically "live" as long as the Backer Train keeps going
- Once 10 minutes pass with no new pledges, the campaign officially closes
- Only then will payments start to be processed
ā ļø Your backing is secured. You don't need to take any action. Once Overtime Mode ends, your pledge will be charged automatically using the payment method you provided.
⤠Will this delay my rewards?
No. Overtime Mode does not impact production or fulfillment timelines.
Creators plan their production schedules separately from campaign timing. The estimated ship dates you see on the campaign page already account for post-campaign processing time, regardless of whether Overtime Mode is active.
Your rewards will ship according to the timeline the creator has set, which is typically several months after the campaign ends to allow for manufacturing and fulfillment.
⤠What if I need to be charged now?
We understand this timing can create financial stress, especially if you're on a fixed income or managing bill payments. We cannot manually process payments early while Overtime Mode is active or end Overtime Mode before it naturally concludes.
The campaign will end automatically once pledge activity stops and payment processing will happen automatically in batches.
If you're concerned about keeping funds available:
- Check the campaign page for the current Overtime countdown
- Most Overtime Mode campaigns end within a few hours-days once momentum slows
- If your card information needs updating, you can do that anytime by visiting your pledge confirmation page and clicking "Edit Payment Method"
- If your payment fails, your pledge will not be canceled. You will be given multiple opportunities to correct your payment, both after the campaign ends, and once survey sends. If your payment fails, you'll be given 14 days to fix it. If it still fails, you will receive a survey, and be given additional time to correct your payment.
š” If your payment method has changed or you're worried about a failed charge, updating your card information now will ensure a smooth transaction when Overtime ends.
⤠What if I think my payment already failed?
If you haven't been charged yet, that's expected ā payments don't process during Overtime Mode.
You won't receive a failed payment notification because no charge has been attempted yet. Once Overtime Mode ends, the system will process all pledges at that time.
ā ļø If your card information has changed (expired card, new card number, etc.), update it now on your pledge confirmation page to avoid issues when the campaign closes.
