How do I update my BackerKit email address?

This article explains how to update the email address on your BackerKit Crowdfunding account or individual surveys, what happens after you change it, and when Support needs to step in.

It's always best to update the original email address on file rather than creating a new account.

A key detail: Kickstarter and BackerKit are separate platforms.

Changing your email on Kickstarter does not automatically update your email on BackerKit. Survey reminders and BackerKit messages go to whatever email is stored with the pledge when the creator imports it into BackerKit.

How do I update the email on my BackerKit account?

Your BackerKit Crowdfunding account is the login that lets you view everything in one place. When you change the email on your account, surveys and pledges under that email will move into that account automatically.

If you only have one account and can access it:

  1. Click your profile avatar in the upper right corner and select Settings
  2. Under "Account", click Update next to your email address

  1. Under "Change Your Email", enter your new details, then click "Update"

βœ… You'll receive a confirmation email at your new address. Once confirmed, the update applies across all surveys and pledges under that email β€” old and new will both appear in your account.

⚠️ If you receive an error "already in use  ", you have multiple accounts. Skip to "I have multiple accounts"

πŸ’‘ If you signed up using Facebook or Google, you can switch to a password-based login by adding an email and password under Settings. You can't switch the other direction. If you can't access your social login anymore, create a new account with a different email and contact Support β€” we can help move your pledges.

What if I can't access the original account?

Quick tip: Even if you can't access your email, you might still be be logged in or can use your password.

  • If you truly can't log in or access the old email:

We recommend creating a new BackerKit account with an email address you control. Contact Support, once we verify your identity, we can transfer your surveys and pledges to your new email where possible.

  • If you've backed a live project or reserved: Contact Support to cancel your old pledge and re-pledge under your new email. We can move reservations, Early Bird, Returning Backer, etc to your new pledge once surveys have been sent.
  • If the campaign has ended but surveys haven't been sent yet: We can update your email but you won't be able to access the pledge under "Your Surveys." until surveys are sent.
  • If a Kickstarter project hasn't sent surveys yet: We can update the email, but the project won't appear in your account until surveys have sent.
  • Pay Over Time and can't access your account? If your plan is still active, contact Support so we can help. If your plan has ended and surveys haven't been sent yet, you'll be able to access your pledge as soon as they do.
  • ⚠️ Kickstarter Pledge Over Time: We can't change your email while the payment plan is active. Contact Kickstarter Support directly about the email on your pledge.

How do I update the email on a single survey?

Sometimes you don't need to change your whole account email β€” you just want survey emails for a specific project to go to a different address.

Contact Support from your original email address if possible. Otherwise, include:

  • The new email address you'd like to use for that survey
  • Your old email address (the one currently on the pledge, if you know it)
  • The project name
  • Your Backer ID or a screenshot of your order confirmation

We'll verify your pledge and move the survey to your new email.

πŸ’‘ If your Kickstarter email doesn't match your BackerKit account, you'll need to request this each time a new Kickstarter survey is sent. We recommend updating your email on one platform to match the other to avoid this.

I have multiple emails or accounts β€” what should I do?

BackerKit ties your pledges and surveys to email. If you've received a "This email is already in use”  , "This account cannot be deleted"  , error, or you know you have more than one account, here's how to sort it out.

  • If one or more of your accounts has BackerKit pledges or Reservations, you will not be able to delete that account β€” even if your pledges have been fulfilled. You can verify this under "Your Pledges" β€” this tab is reserved for BackerKit Crowdfunding pledges only. Check out this doc
  • If an account has never had a BackerKit Crowdfunding pledge or Reservation (i.e. you've only ever had Kickstarter surveys or have an empty account with no pledges), you can delete it yourself anytime to free up that email. If you can't access the account, contact Support and we can delete it for you.

In most cases, the best path for multiple accounts is:

  1. Choose a single email address you want to use long-term.
  2. Make sure you can access that email.
  3. Update your account email to that address before creating a new account β€” all existing surveys attached to that email will automatically transfer over under "Your Surveys"
  • If you can't access an account, can’t delete an account, or need surveys moved from another email, contact Support with the identity verification info below. We'll anonymize the old account even if it can't be fully deleted due to bookkeeping requirements, or just get all of your surveys under one email address if you don’t have an account.

πŸ’‘ You don't need an account to manage Kickstarter surveys β€” only BackerKit Crowdfunding pledges require one. If you've backed projects with different emails and never created a BackerKit account, only Support can update emails on individual surveys or consolidate them.

πŸ’‘ If you've made the switch and don't see a pledge under "Your Pledges", check out this doc.

What does Support need to verify my identity?

Because email changes give full access to a backer's pledges, we need to verify ownership before making changes.

  • If you can still access both emails: Simply contact Support with both emails CC'd and tell us which you'd like to keep as your primary. Please confirm approval from each email separately.
  • If you cannot access the original email, send as much of the following as you can:

Order Details (one or more):

  • A screenshot of an order summary showing the campaign name, Backer Number, and items, or
  • Your pledge/confirmation ID, campaign name, associated username, reward tier/add-ons, and full shipping address or country

Payment Confirmation (one or more):

  • Approximate charge date and a screenshot of the transaction, or
  • The charged amount (including add-ons/shipping/tax) and the last four digits of the card used, or
  • If not yet charged: the last four digits of the stored card, pledged amount (including Add-ons), and approximate pledge date

⚠️ Name and address details alone are not sufficient for verification.

If you can't provide enough information, we can continue verification with our Trust & Safety team and our verification partner, Plaid, which requires uploading identity documents through a secure portal.

A note on project update subscriptions

Updating your email on your BackerKit Crowdfunding account updates where your survey links and BackerKit emails go. It does not update creator-managed emails or newsletters sent through Kickstarter.

⚠️ BackerKit Backer Support cannot manage your Kickstarter update subscriptions. Those are controlled by the project creator or Kickstarter directly.

Updating the email on surveys alone only changes where survey reminders go β€” not project updates.
